The Start of Something

Student smiling at the 2018 Presentation Day

Classes 2019

Classes commence this Wednesday for year 1 to 6 students and after the Best Start Assessments are completed kindergarten students will start school. As indicated in presentation day the school will be forming 6 classes. While we wait to see what our final numbers are, we have committed to 6 classes to ensure that class sizes in K-2 are  within the band of expected numbers and also to ensure that are classes are mostly across stages.

Tomorrow we will be forming five of our six classes with kindergarten students joining the K-1 and forming the K class on Friday. The classes will be:

The Koalas - Kindergarten - taught by Mr Stephen Park (commencing Friday)

The Echidnas - Year K/1 - taught by Mrs Helen Iriarte (Y1 Starting Friday)

The Bilbies - Year 1 - taught by Ms Rachel Davies

The Wombats - Year 2 - taught by Ms Kirsty McIntosh (Assistant Principal - K-2)

The Goannas - Year 3 and 4 - taught by Dr Natalie Cooper

The Dingoes - Year 5 and 6 - taught by Dr Neil Lavitt and Ms Kelly Cusack

We welcome Ms Rachel Davies and Ms Kirsty McIntosh to the school. They join our hard working team of teachers. Mrs Bishop will work Monday to Wednesday and Mrs Jenny Shi Thursday and Friday as support teachers.

Parent Information Evening - 12 February

The school will be holding a parent teacher evening at 6:30pm on Monday 11 February. This will be a chance to gain valuable information from the school and collectively meet your child(ren)’s classroom teacher.  Please put this in your diaries/calendars. We will work with HH to provide childcare.

Languages

Sadly Ms Yang has advised the school that she will not be available to teach this year. The school has taken the opportunity to consolidate on the new Korean language program it won a grant to seed and Ms Sonya An will teacher Korean for 1 full hour to each of the 6 classes. We are sad to see Mandarin go, but given the notice provided, for now we will not be able to provide this language.

Canteen

The P&C was unable to fill the position of Canteen manager to replace the position undertaken by Maria over the last years. A solution to this problem is being sought as a matter of urgency with the intention of providing an external provider with online ordering of healthy food items. Until this happens, there will be no canteen on Friday’s.

Holiday Work at the School

A substantial program of work was completed to the school this holiday with a complete $200,000 refit of air conditioning; a program of painting of some external areas, toilets on the oval and the hall space; a program aimed at improving accessibility; and finally a replacement of the dilapidated fence in the Silver Street lane way. There are still some minor areas to complete and so some workmen will be on site over the coming weeks. We also have a very small area of the main playground isolated with benches, pending a repair to be completed. We hope all this work creates a better school for all.

Chess

Chess will start again this term on Wednesday 20 February at lunch time. This term, bookings and payments will be made directly to the Sydney Academy of chess and open to year 1 to 6 students. Kindergarten students will be allowed to join in terms 3 and 4. A note will be sent home on Friday with the information about making bookings. We believe that chess went very well with the teachers very impressed with the progress made by all students.
