Feel the Harmony!

Kindergarten student enjoying creative play

Harmony Day

This Thursday 21 March is Harmony Day. After the terrible events of last Friday in NZ these days take on new meaning as we search for tolerance, understanding and inclusiveness amongst the great diversity in our communities. On Thursday, the students are invited to come to school in dress which symbolises in some way their identity, their families identity and possibly their cultural links. If you are unsure, wearing something orange is another way of expressing harmony. All the classroom teachers will be doing some work in class and will be placing this on some of our corridor walls. Look our for posts on Facebook for pictures.

Student Activity Statements

The school office will be this Monday sending home in sealed envelopes the student activity statements for 2019. The statement includes costs for Got Game, Reading Eggs and Mathletics as well as books, photocopy fees and textbooks. There is also a voluntary contribution fee, which is set at $20. The activity statement can be paid online using the parent online payment option via the school website, by cheque or by cash. We do not have EFTPOS facilities. The deadline for payment of fees will be the end of term 1 - 12 April.

Premiers Sporting Challenge Leaders Day

Students from years 5 and 6 will next week be attending the premiers sporting challenge leaders day. The day will include students from a number of other surrounding public school attending a day of sport. There is no cost for the event which includes students travelling by bus to Wilkins PS.

DON’T Forget your Canteen Order

Last week our first week of the new canteen solution was a huge hit with many orders of quality food coming into the school. The children all seemed to love it and many of the staff purchased and also enjoyed the bigger range of food and the quality of the food provided was very high and great value for money.

For the first few weeks until it becomes familiar we’ll remind you to put your orders in via the Flexischools app. Once you order, you will be sent an email to confirm. If you don’t get that email it probably means something is wrong so follow up. Botany Bites are going to provide a few backup meals for the freezer for the eventuality of an order having gone missing. Remember that the deadline is 9am on Tuesday morning unless you want to order sushi which has a deadline 9 hours earlier 12am Tuesday morning.

Attendance

Parents and carers are reminded of the importance of consistent student attendance in providing a consistent schooling experience for your child(ren). It is considered a well being issue and when sustained and persistent, attendance may be referred to child protection teams as it is considered to be educational neglect.
Permission should always be sought for your child to not attend school for extended periods. If an absence is 10+ days, an official extended leave form needs to be filled out. Less than that, there needs to be an application in writing to the principal. Parents are requested to use the 11 weeks of given holiday to go away. If for some reason this is not possible (such as the occasional (not every year) family holiday overseas to a far away destination) the leave may be justified. However, if it is to avoid busy school holiday periods with higher fees it is not justifiable. Clearly every case needs to be assessed - hence put it in writing. It is important to note that these days are recorded on the school attendance record and are not exempt. Sick days of greater than 2 days do require a medical certificate.
